A weekly creative after-school club run by Derby City Virtual School for Looked After Children at The Museum of Making, Derby. Thread of Life students have made organic tracksuits, printed sweatshirts, rucksacks, British wool teddy bags, pyjamas and dressing gowns.
Thread of Life worked alongside Derby City Virtual School for Looked After Children to run this annual festival, celebrating children in care and their creativity. Alongside a host of artist-led workshops, Thread of Life helped 60 students construct their own organic cotton tote bag, using a sewing machine.
As part of Derby Museums’ wool project takeover, Thread of Life students, in partnership with John Smedley Knitwear Manufacturer, will create a sustainable School uniform jumper using British wool, alongside discussion about fast fashion and its contribution to the climate crisis.
Sponsored through funding from ARTFUND.
Thread of Life has been honored to collaborate with Madlug, a CIC bag manufacturer who gift luggage to children in care, preventing children from having to move their belongings in black plastic bin bags.
Madlug commissioned our Thread of Life students to customize Madlug bags, with students experimenting with print, embroidery and patch design for this creative customization project.
With fast fashion being one of the top 5 most harmful industries to the global environmental crisis, we wanted to make dressing ethically and sustainably easier for shoppers, equipping them to dress with a clear conscience.
Thread of Life curated the first Ethical Atelier in the region in Nottingham, March 2024. The Atelier saw a showcase of the best local ethical fashion brands, hands-on repair workshops, sessions from industry experts, makers and designers and access to preloved and vintage clothing on sale and available in the Big Swap.
The event sought to educate and equip as well as continue to build a community engaged in the conversation about sustainable fashion and create a platform for human rights charities impacted by these issues.
Brands and charities included 3rd Rock, REworked348, RAF & GRACE, Isabelle Pennington Mead, Erosa design, Rebuild East Midlands and Atelier.
